Dom began his hairdressing career fresh out of school, before heading to London’s Covent Garden to work as a trainee hairdresser at the world famous Trevor Sorbie. But just 6 months later, he found himself back at home, on the outskirts of Northampton, working in his mum's local Salon.
Long before the world of Google and social media, Dom felt lost in the wilderness. Searching for opportunities and pathways in the industry - he craved to hear the stories of hairdressing icons and the secrets of their success... Fast forward 31 years and the ‘How To Cut It’ podcast was born!
Now approaching his 100th podcast, Dom has interviewed an enviable list of hairdressing icons, rising stars and leading educators; all in a bid to bring his listeners the inspiration and insight that he struggled to find in the early days of his career.
Just a few from Dom's impressive list of podcast guests.
Getting to know Dom Lehane in 5 questions!
We believe that laughter can cure a world of woes, so what makes you laugh?
When I get together with my old school friends, we go right back into the childish humour we all had at 14 years old, resulting in some serious belly laughter!
Who's been the biggest influence on you and why?
Well, my Mother, an independent and kind woman who managed to run her small hair business whilst raising me and my brother. In more recent times; Pat Flynn, the host of ‘The Smart Passive Income’ podcast. He inspired me to start podcasting.
It's so important to be OK with making mistakes and they can often lead to our biggest lessons, with that in mind - what's your favourite mistake & what did you learn from it?
In the year 2000 we opened a Men’s Grooming Salon, it looked great and smashed it in the evenings, but we over spent and got our numbers wrong.
Two years later, it closed...
The lesson was; don’t start too big, grow gradually, pick the right place and be realistic with your numbers!
What do you hope the Inspirational Minds audience will gain from listening to your story?
I want them to be inspired and excited and to know that they can be whatever they want to be, but understand they won’t achieve it by going home each night and playing candy crush on their phone!
If you could pass on only one piece of advice or inspiration what would it be?
Never be afraid to change direction on your journey, be patient, work hard and be honest with what is possible - and then you can achieve anything.
